Middlesbrough Golf Club will once again stage this prestigious 72 hole Golf Competition for Category 1 players under 23 years of age on the opening day of the Competition. Total Prize vouchers in excess of £1,400. It has always attracted the very best young players from allover Britain , many going on to attain international recognition and/or success in the Professional game.

Previous winners of the MacGill Trophy include Sandy Lyle (1977), Roger Chapman (1979), Richard Boxhall (1982), Richard Finch (1998), whilst Mark Roe won the Fairweather Salver for Category 1 players under 18 years in 1979 and 1980.

Conditions

1. The Championship shall be decided by strokes over four rounds of 18 holes each, which shall be played in accordance with the Rules of Golf as approved by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, and in accordance with the Local Rules approved by the Championship Committee.

2. 132 Competitors shall be eligible to compete. They shall play one round on Tuesday, 5th August and one round on Wednesday, 6th August. The 40 lowest scores over these 36 holes, and any tying for 40th place, shall qualify for the final 36 holes to be played on Thursday, 7th August. The remainder shall be eliminated.

3. In the event of a tie or ties after four rounds, the Championship shall be decided by a hole by hole play-off which shall take place immediately over the 1st and 18th holes and the same rules for a play-off will apply to the Fairweather Salver. In the event of ties for 2nd to 8th places, prize money will be shared. Ties for other prizes shall be decided on the lowest score for the last 18 holes (or 9 or 6 or 1 hole). If a tie still arises, the scores for the previous round shall be treated in the same way until a decision is reached.

4. Any competitor who is not present at the First Teeing Ground when called upon to start shall be disqualified.

5. The Championship Committee reserve the right to fix and/or alter starting times. In the event of play having to be abandoned the Championship Committee reserve the right to amend the rules of the competition.

6, The ball must be included in the list of conforming balls as listed by the R. & A.

7. Entries shall be made only on the special Entry Form to be obtained from the Secretary of the Championship Committee, Middlesbrough Golf Club, Brass Castle Lane, Middlesbrough, Cleveland TS8 9EE. Tel. (01642) 311515 or alternatively from our web site: www.middlesbroughgolfclub.co.uk

8. Entrants must conform in all respects to the Rules of Amateur Status and shall sign the declaration to that effect contained in the Entry Form.

9. Entrants must be under 23 years of age on 7th August, 2008.

10. Entries will only be received from players whose playing handicap does not exceed five strokes under the Council of National Golf Union's handicapping scheme, or similar standard, at the time of entry.

11. Competitors entering from Great Britain and Ireland shall do so subject to the approval of the Committee of the Golf Club from which the Competitor elects to enter.

12. Competitors entering from Overseas shall enter through the Secretary of the recognised authority controlling golf in the country from which the Competitor elects to enter. The Secretary of such recognised authority shall sign the declaration in the Entry Form that, to the best of his knowledge and belief, the entrant conforms in all respects to the Rules of Amateur Status.

13. Entries will be limited to 132 competitors. .In the event of applications exceeding this number, entries for the higher handicap Competitors shall be decided by ballot, which shall take place immediately after the closing date for entries. All unsuccessful entrants will be informed without delay thereafter, but will be given the opportunity to compete if scratchings subsequently occur. Entrance Fees will be refunded to entrants balloted out, who do not compete.

14. The entrance Fee of £25.00 together with fully completed Entry Forms must be received by the Secretary of the Championship Committee, Middlesbrough Golf Club, Brass Castle Lane, Middlesbrough, Cleveland TS8 9EE not later than Mid-day on Monday, 28th July, 2008.

15. Entries will be accepted by telephone, or e-mail (enquiries@middlesbroughgolfclub.co.uk ) provided a subsequent Entry Form is fully completed and received. Entrance Fees will not be refunded unless intimation of a scratching is received before the closing time and date for entries, except for .those entrants who may be balloted out and who do not subsequently compete.

16. All entries shall be subject to the approval of the Championship Committee, who reserve the right to accept or refuse any entry without giving reason for their decision, which shall be final. The Committee may also request the production of a Certificate of Birth of any Competitor either before or during the Championship.

Prizes

17. Total value of vouchers is £1,455.

18. The winner of the Championship for 2008 shall be presented with the MacGill Championship Trophy, to be held by the Club from which he shall have entered and he shall return the Trophy in time for the following Championship. He shall also receive a voucher for £250 and a replica. There will be additional vouchers for those finishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th, including ties, the best round of the Championship, the best score of each of the other three rounds and the best qualifying score. All vouchers to be presented by 30th November, 2008.

19. The winner of the Fairweather Salver for 2008 shall be the competitor aged under 18 on the 5th August, 2008 who returns the best score over 72 holes. He will be presented with the Trophy, which he shall return in time for the following Championship, together with a replica and voucher, and the runner-up will receive a voucher.

20. Competitors are requested to register at the Clubhouse immediately on arrival at Middlesbrough Golf Club.
